Your 5-Day Malta Road Trip
Day 1: The Silent City & Sunset Cliffs
- Morning (Mdina & Rabat): Start your trip in the ancient, walled “Silent City” of Mdina. Parking Tip: Park in the large car parks outside the city walls (it’s pedestrian-only inside). Wander the honey-coloured alleys, then walk to the neighbouring town of Rabat to explore St. Paul’s Catacombs.
- Afternoon (Dingli Cliffs): Drive to Malta’s highest point, the Dingli Cliffs. Park easily along the road and walk the clifftop paths for breathtaking views. This is the best place on the island to watch the sunset.
Day 2: History & Harbours (Valletta & The Three Cities)
- All Day (Valletta): Malta’s capital is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Parking Tip: Do NOT try to drive into Valletta. Park in the large, affordable “MCP Floriana” car park just outside the main city gate and walk in. Explore St. John’s Co-Cathedral, the Upper Barrakka Gardens (for the 12:00 cannon salute), and the charming streets.
- Afternoon (Optional): From Valletta, take the scenic 5-minute ferry across the Grand Harbour to visit The Three Cities (Birgu, Senglea, and Cospicua) for a more authentic, less crowded vibe.
Day 3: Sun, Sand & Popeye
- Morning (Golden Bay & Għajn Tuffieħa): Drive to the northwest coast to visit Malta’s most famous sandy beaches, which lie side-by-side. Park at Golden Bay or the Għajn Tuffieħa car park (a small fee applies).
- Afternoon (Popeye Village): Just a short drive away is Anchor Bay, home of the 1980 “Popeye” film set. You can pay to enter the park, or you can drive to the cliff overlook on the opposite side for the perfect free photo.
Day 4: The Gozo Adventure
- Morning (Gozo Ferry): This is a must-do! Drive your rental car straight to the Ċirkewwa Ferry Terminal. You’ll drive right onto the boat. The crossing is 25 minutes, and you pay for your (very reasonable) car ticket on the return journey.
- All Day (Gozo): A car is essential on Gozo. Drive to Victoria (Rabat) to explore the magnificent Ċittadella. Then, head to Dwejra to see the Blue Hole and Fungus Rock. Finally, go for a swim at the unique red-sand Ramla Bay. Drive back to the ferry in the evening.
Day 5: Southern Charms & A Hidden Swim
- Morning (Marsaxlokk): Drive to the charming fishing village of Marsaxlokk. It’s famous for its colourful Luzzu boats and (on Sundays) a massive open-air market. It’s the perfect place for a fresh seafood lunch.
- Afternoon (St. Peter’s Pool): Time for a hidden gem. A short drive from Marsaxlokk is St. Peter’s Pool, a natural, horseshoe-shaped swimming hole. The road is a bit rough, but a car is the only way to get here. It’s the perfect final stop to celebrate your adventure.
